In an interesting literary twist, the narrator of this book is a book, Joseph Roth’s Rebellion. Having survived a Nazi book burning in 1933, it is now in the hands of Lena Knecht who is traveling from New York to Berlin to try to figure out the hand-drawn map in the back of the book.
The reader is taken through Roth’s life (he was a real person) for an examination of censorship and brutal oppression. Hamilton manages to include a lot of information, ideas, and history in this novel in a way that really packs a punch.
One of the best I’ve had the pleasure to read in a long time.
This title is available in print at the Library.
