A Funny Farm in Fallon

A Funny Farm in Fallon

Author: Jo Petteruti

Brian and Shayna Bird affectionately call their home the Funny Farm, and their last name fits the bill, too. On this farm, you will see alpacas, including one named Cola that will let you pet him but also likes to give little nip-bites if you turn your back on him. His coat is woolly thick yet incredibly soft and gets sheared once a year. There are a couple of small horses sharing the alpaca's pasture, and they seem to get along with each other or maybe they just avoid Cola.

There are three grown emus, and eight cute as can be 11-week-old baby emus. Around the back of the house is the Funny Farm chicken coop with a large flock of chickens, a colorful rooster, that loves to strut his stuff, and a few turkeys including one big tom. Sometimes the chickens get out and lay eggs in little hiding spots all over the backyard. While we visited, one of them got caught in a tomato cage and had to be rescued. To the left of the coop are two bunnies, a male and female each in their own hutch to ensure they don't turn into a nest of bunnies, something that our publisher is very familiar with.
