Dean Heller (R), former U.S. Senator and Nevada Secretary of State and took a moment to address a crowd gathered at the Nevada Law Enforcement Memorial at the State Capital for a “Fund the Police” rally. The Nevada Police Union hosted the rally was hosted seeking to bring awareness to some of the problems facing law enforcement officers, particularly those working for the Nevada State Police.
Heller delighted the crowd. “I’m here to let you know there are people out there who can make a difference,” said Heller. “As soon as I am done here, I am walking over to the Capitol Building and I am going to file for governor.”
Heller expressed his concern for the Nevada State Police and the longstanding pay, benefit, and training disparity between NSP officers working in local law enforcement. Between pay and benefits, NSP officers earn significantly less than county and city officers. They also receive less training. According to Heller, Nevada politicians aren’t doing anything about this, stating, “It is not okay for our officers to be compensated less, these are people that put their lives on the line.”
Several factors are contributing to the many factors that are making law enforcement jobs more dangerous, continued Heller, citing low graduation and employment rates, along with high suicide and human trafficking rates. “These all make the jobs of peace officers more difficult.”
