TCID Sets Water Allocation – Starting with a Short Year

Author: Rachel Dahl

After thorough presentations from the staff of the National Weather Service and the Federal Watermaster’s office and lengthy discussions by the board members, the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District Board of Directors Carson set the water year on Tuesday during a special meeting.

The Carson Division was set at a 70% allocation with ordering beginning on March 15, and the Truckee Division will receive 90% of their water but will wait until April 15 to begin ordering.

The difference comes from forecasting and projections in the different watersheds, with the Carson River system fairly dry, as is the Truckee River system. The difference between watersheds is found in the regulating reservoirs on the upper Truckee system along with the governing scheme set by the Truckee River Operating Agreement that allows for greater maneuvering of the system.

Additionally, although this year is similarly dry in comparison to last year, the soils throughout the Newlands project from the mountains to the Lahontan Valley are significantly more saturated this year due to the heavy precipitation received during December.

The annual Water Users Meetings have also been scheduled, the Fallon meeting is set for Thursday, March 17 at 6 p.m. in the Churchill County Commission Chambers. The Fernley meeting will be held in the City Council Chambers on Wednesday, March 23 at 6 p.m.
