HOSA Students Honored - Head to National Competition

Staff report -- The Health Occupations Students of America, HOSA, students from the Churchill County High School were recently recognized by the school board for their accomplishments at the state HOSA conference. The mission of HOSA is to inspire students to become leaders in the global health community through education, collaboration, and experience.
“HOSA is part of the CCSD Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs at the high school,” said board president Kathryn Whitaker during the presentation, “which is developing as the career pathways and has been a great program.”
“Tonight we have several of these students who did very well at state and will be competing internationally,” said Whitaker, introducing Allison Frost, who won 4th place for bed assessment and was a health care issues exam qualifier; McKenna Jacques, 3rd place in medical reading; Sadie Lopez, 3rd place for health care photography and a qualifier for the health care issue exam; Jenna Bradley, 2nd place for Community Awareness – for the platform on vaping, Vera Vaz, 1st place in job seeking skills and a qualifier for the health care issues exam; Gabby Loop, health care issues exam qualifier. Students who were not able to attend were Molly Woolsey, a health care issues exam qualifier; Mackenzie Bernard, 2nd place community awareness; Sara Corser, 2nd place community awareness; Liz Stephens, 3rd place nursing assistant and health care issues exam qualifier.
The purpose of HOSA is to develop leadership and technical skill competencies through a program of motivation, awareness, and recognition which is important to health education.
The HOSA students will now travel to Orlando, Florida this summer to compete in the national conference and skills testing. The board of trustees voted to donate $1,000 toward the students for their trip.
In addition to their studies and preparing for the national conference, the HOSA students will continue raising funds to cover the expenses of their trip. Their advisor and teacher is Elaine Adams and she can be contacted at the high school at 423-2181.
Whitaker recognized the students for their hard work and for continuing the legacy of the HOSA program. “We have had several students who have been recognized over the years for their accomplishments in this program,” she said.
