Churchill School District Transportation Woes Lead to Apology

Churchill School District Transportation Woes Lead to Apology

An apology was sent out Thursday evening to families regarding the transportation shortages and the failure to communicate effectively and efficiently regarding route shortages.

On Thursday morning there were three routes with no drivers. That afternoon, three route shortages turned into seven route shortages. Despite all efforts, district staff was not able to cover all of the routes which led to sending out a message to parents asking for their help to pick up their children.

Staff then experienced technical difficulties with the messaging system and were not able to send the message out in a timely manner. “We understand this is no excuse,” said the press release issued Thursday evening, “and we are working on having a contingency plan in place in case this outage happens again in the future. We planned for and were able to get EVERY child who depends on school transportation home between parents and the help of our amazing staff who stepped in for us.”

Several staff members drove district vans delivering students to their homes, so they did not have to sit at school for several hours.

Superintendent Summer Stephens apologized saying, “We want to thank parents who were able to find alternate transportation for their child/ren and apologize to those of you who we did not reach effectively. It was never our intent to shift our responsibility of getting your child/ren home safely to you or to your child.”

By the end of the day, the district was able to get all children home. “We make no excuse for the late notice given or the miscommunication that happened within the district. We know we let our parents down and are going to be working closely with not only transportation, but all departments in our district, to be sure this confusion and late notice regarding our students does not happen again,” read the release.

“If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me directly at [email protected] or 775-423-5184,” said Stephens.
