On Monday, June 14 the Fallon Churchill Fire Department was dispatched to 2900 Enterprise Way, according to Fire Chief Jared Dooley. A report of a large fire at the City of Fallon Transfer Station was called in by neighboring properties.
The Fire Department responded to the above address with 13 pieces of equipment and 30 firefighters. A separate call was issued to NAS Fallon which responded with an Engine and 4 additional firefighters.
Upon arrival, the fire was classified as a contents fire. The “barn” structure at the transfer station contained a large amount of garbage that had become completely involved with fire. The fire department worked for approximately six hours to bring the fire under control and provide as much protection for the structure as possible. The Fire Department worked into the next day to overhaul the contents of the building and completely stabilize the incident.
Currently, the transfer station is temporarily closed due to possible structural damage. Brian Byrd, public works director said city crews are working hard to get a temporary drop-off station set up in town. “It should happen fairly quickly,” he said, “we are working through some of the last details now.”
As soon as the temporary drop-off is open that information will be broadcast throughout the community. “Our goal is to get some roll-off bins and some support so people can just come into town, drop it off, and we can haul it out to the landfill, so we don’t have to send people all the way out there,” said Byrd.
He said as soon as more is known on a timeline for the Transfer Station reopening that information will be shared as well.
