Book Review — Little Faith

Book Review — Little Faith

Little Faith by Nickolas Butler

Faith and male friendship are at the core of this beautifuly written story set in a small town in rural Wisconsin. Lyle and Peg lost a baby early in their marriage and with it went Lyle's faith in God. He wanted and tried to believe but it never felt real to him.

Now in his 60s and dealing with issues related to his adopted daughter, grandson, and a shady preacher, he confronts his faith again. Longtime friend Hoot, dying from cancer, is part of the mix as is Charlie, his childhood friend who left, had adventures, and came back to become the minister of an ever shrinking congregation.

Baker's descriptions of the natural beauty surrounding the area are stunning -- be it a snowstorm, the wild orchard where he works, or the drive to deliver apples along country roads. I just feel like I'm right there beside him.

The binding though, that holds the story together and drives it forward, is Peg, Lyle's wife of 40 years who quietly leads and supports him as he works through the troubles before him.

Butler is one of my favorite writers who also wrote the novel, Shotgun Lovesongs

We reached out to the writer/submitter and got this info back...hope it's helpful. PBM: Pharmacy Benefit Managers are pharmacies that are owned by insurance companies. (CVS is one.) They negotiate with drug makers to get reduced pricing for medications, but they historically have not passed along those savings to patients. https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc_gov/pdf/pharmacy-benefit-managers-staff-report.pdf MFN: Most Favored Nation pricing is a policy that means a country agrees to offer the same trade concessions (like tariffs or price reductions) to all member nations of the World Trade Organization (WTO). When applied to pharmaceuticals, it could disrupt global access, deter innovation, and obscure the deeper systemic issues in American health care. https://petrieflom.law.harvard.edu/2025/05/22/the-global-risks-of-americas-most-favored-nation-drug-pricing-policy/Comment publication date: 6/23/25, 7:47 AMComment source: L E T T E R TO THE EDITOR
