High School: The Night of the Seniors

Viviane Ugalde/ The Fallon Post

This past week was very important for the fall sports, as the teams celebrated their senior nights. While the seasons have been shortened and some sports will not get a state competition, the different schools still managed to make their seniors feel special. As per tradition, each senior posed with their parents for photos and were talked about individually, with their teammates and coaches watching and cheering them on.

On Friday, April 2 Oasis Academy Bighorns volleyball team played against Pyramid Lake Lakers for their senior night. Oasis has three seniors: # 2, Sequoya Casey, # 7 Sadie O’Flaherty, and # 17 Taryn Barrenchea. The three girls have been with the volleyball program for four years. Sequoya’s position is opposite hitter (OPP.), Sadie is the team captain, and her position is outside hitter (OH), Taryn position is middle blocker (MB). As a nice perk to their special night, Oasis beat Pyramid in a three straight. The first set ended with 25-12, the second set was 25-3, and the third set ended as 25-15. A good night for these seniors, for sure. The Oasis Academy Varsity squad has qualified for playoffs this year, which will start on April 10 and as of right now, the match-up will be held in Tonopah. Go Bighorns!!

CCHS Boys Varsity soccer team also played on Friday. They played against Fernley for their senior night. Greenwave has six seniors on the squad for this season. # 5 Cole Hamlin, # 6 Matthew Fagundes, # 7 Kyle Kenealy, #14 Dionisio Lopez, # 20 Christopher Ehlers and # 21 Benjamin Polish. The boys tied against the Vaqueros 2-2. Cole scored with an assist from # 13 Bryan Mendoza, who also had a goal.

CCHS Girls Varsity soccer team also played against Fernley for their senior night. The girls’ team is saying goodbye to a lot of girls, seven girls that will graduate this year. # 2 Vera Vaz, # 3 Hailey Guerrero, # 6 Makayle Mathisen, # 10 Aubrey Jaquez, # 21 Bianca Lopez, # 42 Kendra Pacheo, and # 43 Larissa Sanchez. Each girl on the team has gone above and beyond in both their athletic and academic careers. At least half the girls have played another varsity sport including but not limited to, basketball and swim team, and some of the girls have competed in the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) events. The Lady Greenwave beat the Lady Vaqueros in 7-0 shutout. Rachel Mori, # 40 scored her first goal of her career, and it was a left-footed shot. Makayle scored, Bianca scored twice, Hailey scored, # 12 Sidney Gusewelle scored and one for Greenwave was an “own goal” by the Vaqueros.  At the end of the match the ladies ran around the field so the parents could congratulate the team on a well-played game with high fives with the coaches following.

The only outlier of this group was the CCHS Girls Varsity volleyball team. These girls had their senior night on March 26. The Lady Wave volleyball team only had three seniors: # 2 Lacee Wallace, # 4 Aisha Sharron and # 10 Addison Sandberg. All three girls are definitely ones to watch on the court. All three play every game like it is their last and do a great job of hyping up their fellow teammates when the game is not in their favor. Wallace plays Libero, she wears a different jersey because of her position. Sharron plays OH and Sandberg plays as both OH and Setter. When all three are on the court together they make a huge difference. Unfortunately, the girls lost against the Dayton Dust Devils 0-3 in a shutout.
