Nearly 60 eager golfers gathered at the Fallon Municipal Golf Course on Saturday morning to participate in the first charity tournament of the 2021 season. The Inaugural Sons of the American Legion Post 16 Golf Tournament raised funds to support veterans' programs and services provided by the American Legion in Fallon. The tournament consisted of a 9-hole scramble with 4-person teams followed by a 2-person horse race. Golfers also vied for individual achievements in the Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin, and Wobbley Ball putting contests.
Posting a noteworthy score of 25 strokes in the 9-hole scramble, the first place team (Jeremy Barnett, Matt Nunn, Matt Benedickt, and Tim Hill) won $400 in course credit. Second place was a three-way tie with a score of 27. Ultimately, a winner was determined by a card draw after two of the teams were still tied after 3 separate scorecard tiebreakers. The $200 second prize in course credit was split between Ed Smirnes, Jim “Izzy” Isbister, Alan Kalt, and Andrew Palmer. Individual contest winners were Nicole Dooley and Matt Benedickt for the Longest Drive, Angela Rowan and Marcos Maldonado for Closest to the Pin, and Brenda Boone and Mac McDuffie for the Wobbley Ball prize.
The afternoon concluded with the two-person horse race, an event that is unique and not for the faint of heart. Twenty-two teams teed off on the sixth hole and played head-to-head in an alternate shot format. After each hole, teams are eliminated based on the leaderboard until only 4 teams remained, battling it out on the final hole. In the end, Matt Benedickt and Jeremy Barnett came out on top, securing another $200 in course credit.
Thanks to the generous support of sponsors City of Fallon, A&K Earthmovers, Carol and Charlie Arciniega, Neil and Kelli Kelly, Shine The Salon, The Grid, Eagle Valley Motors, O’Byrnes Art Studio, the Family of Richard Cline, Brian and Johna Greene, Pip Valentin, Dolan Auto Group, Steve Wrenn, and Ron and Kim Peterson, and to all of the amazing participants. The Inaugural Sons of the American Legion Post 16 tournament raised over $5,000 to support veterans services in Churchill County.
