On Friday, March 19, Cold Springs Station Resort held their Grand Re-Opening, kicking off the event with their famous Friday Fish Fry, which will run on the third Friday of each month from March through November. If you can't have fish or just don't care for it, the chef will fry some chicken for you instead. The resort is located at 52300 Austin Highway, about 70 miles east of Fallon and just a mile or so beyond the original Hwy 50 Pony Express station.
Cold Springs Station Resort has a full-service restaurant that offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, a large L-shaped cocktail bar, gift shop, a six-room motel that includes two rooms with a kitchenette, a RV Park with 25 full hook-up pull-through campsites, a few little stand-alone cabins, and laundry and restroom facilities. Rental rates are offered for daily, weekly, and monthly stays. There is even an outdoor community fire pit that beckons for company and conversation. Miles of off-road trails surround the property, with mountain elevations reaching over 9,000 feet. It's a popular spot for campers, hunters, nature lovers, hikers, bicyclists, and just about anyone else that enjoys the outdoors. It's not unusual to see deer, antelope, or bighorn sheep among the desert and hillside landscapes. It snowed the morning after the Grand Re-Opening, dressing up the mountains in sparkling white layers that emphasized the mountain contours. Big lazy clouds sat like hats on the mountaintops, making the views just spectacular.
The Friday Fish Fry is an all-you-can-eat event, and this last one had a great turnout with a number of Fallon folks in attendance, many of which stayed the night (this writer included). The freshly battered Atlantic Cod was served crispy, and the plentiful dinner included a creamy clam chowder, French fries, and coleslaw. There weren't many diners going back for more because of the huge portions served to begin with. The drinks were generous and the prices were very reasonable. They can also accommodate various dietary needs or restrictions. The chef made a great salad for one of the diners that night who could not eat the battered items because of a health restriction. The pool table is still there, but if the need arises for more exercise, there is also plenty of floor space for dancing.
The owners joined us for drinks after dinner, and they are just delightful. George and Barbara McNeil are the on-site members of the Cold Springs Station Resort LLC. Their son, Nick McNeil, is the new General Man- ager, and he and his wife, Christine, now run the facility. Christine is a beautiful lady with a warm heart and a lovely smile. They moved here from Tacoma, Washington, where Nick was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force after six years of service. Christine had been a stay-at-home mom raising three children and now also helps Nick out in the restaurant as she feels up to it. The resort is starting to plan other events for this year. On April 24, they will hold the Mike and Nick's Birthday Trap Shoot starting at 10 am. The event will include matches for adults and kids, and prizes will be awarded to the winners of each match.
