An unnamed late-middle-aged woman narrates a series of riffs on recent and past experiences including a meeting with a man who turns out to be her ex-husband, a stay in an Airbnb starring in a mystery novel which reappears later, and all winding its way to her companionship with a friend dying of cancer. The stories are seemingly simple but they actually drill down to basic, hard, and often unanswerable questions. Superbly written and thought-provoking.
Carol is the Director of the Churchill County Library. This is the first time she’s read a book by Nunez who also wrote The Friend, winner of the National Book Award for Fiction in 2018. She looks forward to reading that book.
