Jane Moon has served the City of Fallon as the Director of Tourism for the past four years and has just been chosen by Governor Sisolak to serve on the State Commission on Tourism.
Chaired by the Lieutenant Governor, Kate Marshall, the commission is made up of eight members who are appointed by the governor, the two directors of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority, as well as the Chair of the Board of Museums and History, the Chair of the Nevada Indian Commission, and the Chair of the Board of the Nevada Arts Council.
Members must possess experience and professional background in tourism, and travel or hospitality, including gaming. Moon holds one of the eight appointed positions and is one of the two rural commissioners. She said, “They want to make sure the rural communities are represented in all things tourism.”
Moon is surrounded in her office behind City Hall by all things Fallon – books, old advertising posters, and left-over bling from the Rural Roundup hosted last year by the City. There is also, tucked in a little frame above her desk, a quote Mayor Tedford has had scribbled on his desk blotter for years, “Critical thought, careful analysis and judgement.”
“I often look at it so I’m sure to consider how he sees things too, I am his appointee,” said Moon.
She is passionate about her position at the City and promoting the local area throughout the state working closely with the Travel Nevada office. “There’s so much to learn still, however I truly enjoy working with not only our local community but the rural people in the Pony Express Territory on the vitality of the economy.”
The Division of Tourism was established in 1983 by then Governor Richard Bryan to diversify the state economy that had historically relied so heavily on gaming. “It’s to make sure that we also have our wide-open spaces, our history, and our heritage, it’s all intertwined,” said Moon.
One of the issues facing the commission is looking at tourism in terms of moving forward from the effects of the COVID situation. “Now we know we have to have contingency plans,” she said. “It’s not just the enjoyment factor, it’s making sure people are traveling safely, making sure people feel comfortable coming to Nevada, that they feel safe in our hotels, in our outdoor spaces, in our museums. It’s planning for those things and making sure we can still invite, we are still open.”
According to Moon, the City continues working to promote local businesses. “We are making sure we are staying safe, and one of the Mayor’s major concerns right now is making sure our businesses stay afloat and thriving.”
Mayor Tedford said he is “very happy for Jane, one of the City’s appointed officials, has been appointed to this very important tourism post by Governor Sisolak. I thank him for this appointment, and I know that Jane will do a tremendous job representing Fallon and the State of Nevada on the Nevada Tourism Commission.”
