The Downtown Merchants Association has been hosting their Spooktacular event on Maine Street for over 10 years, but during their meeting on Monday realized they do not have the manpower this year, especially with the requirements of Governor Sisolak’s COVID directives, to make it happen.
Lisa Gonzales, president-elect of the group this year said in an email, “We could not pull off having the Spooktacular with the few people who were in attendance, so because of lack of manpower and the uncertainly of being able to keep everyone safe and healthy, we made the decision to forego it this year.”
The DMA is an all-volunteer organization that works with the Chamber of Commerce and Churchill Economic Development Authority to promote local business in the community.
In addition to their Shop Small Saturday, and Home Means Fallon events, volunteers at the DMA have expanded their mission over the years and have become involved in the Nevada Main Street program, a state effort to diversify and promote community downtown areas.
Made up of business owners primarily from Maine Street, although any business is welcome to join, like any organization the success of their programs depends on the amount of manpower they are able to produce for any specific project.
Instead of holding their elections on Monday as scheduled because several members “are no longer able to continue in the current roles,” the group set plans to formally disband at their November meeting. The remaining members will put their efforts into the Chamber’s Ambassador program.
A separate group has been organizing a Trunk or Treat event for Halloween through social media, but recently expressed their need for volunteers to make that happen as well.
