Yes -- That was an Earthquake!

Update: By 4:29 a.m., The USGS had downgraded the first quake to a 5.8, with several aftershocks in the vacinity ranging from 3.8 to 4.9.

The United States Geological Survey reports a 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit 37 miles north of Tonopah at 4:03 this morning, with a 3.8 magnitude aftershock hitting south of Gabbs, shortly after. As we post this story a 4.0 aftershock rocked north of Tonopah again. Tonopah is located 175 miles southeast of Fallon.

Earthquakes happen without warning and can result in injuries and damage. The Department of Homeland Security recommends if an earthquake happens, protect yourself right away.

  • If you are in a car, pull over and stop. Set your parking brake.
  • If you are in bed, turn face down and cover your head and neck with a pillow.
  • If you are outdoors, stay outdoors away from buildings.
  • Do not get in a doorway.
  • Do not run outside.

We will continue updating this story.
