VFW Post 1002 Presents Awards at CCHS
Ashby Trotter Will Compete Today in Mesquite in the Regional “Voice of Democracy” Contest By Rachel Dahl -- Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1002 representative Mike Terry presented two awards on Thursday, January 17th at Churchill County High School, giving Keith Lund the 2018 Teacher Award, and Ashby Trotter the Voice of Democracy essay contest award. During the presentation of the awards, Terry said that VFW cares about the education of America’s youth, and has developed a slate of programs dedicated to helping educators.  “VFW programs are designed to stimulate interest in history, traditions, civics, flag etiquette, and patriotism,” he said. In honoring Lund, Terry said that when Mr. Lund taught at the Jr. High he was very interested in the Civil War and brought many veterans into his classroom to speak about their experiences.  At the High School, Lund now teaches a special financial incentive class called “Bite of Reality” and he also coaches basketball. “Today we honor him with the National Citizenship Education Teacher Post Recognition Award and it is signed by Commander McLean,” said Terry. He then presented the Voice of Democracy essay contest award to Ashby Trotter and played her speech for the audience over the microphone.  The essay contest theme this year was “Why My Vote Matters,” and there was not a dry eye in the room when she finished. Trotter now travels to Mesquite, Nevada where she will compete today in the District competition. The state winner of the essay contest will win a $1,000 scholarship and a trip to Washington D.C. to compete in the national contest for a $30,000 scholarship. Terry also presented Lund and Trotter with prizes donated by local businesses and organizations including Stockman’s Casino, Jerry’s Restaurant, Kieran Kalt, and Pizza Barn.
