This past Veterans’ Day evening, Boy Scout Troop 1776, also known as “Troop Independence” conducted the “Mother of all flag retirement ceremonies” at Churchill County Fair Grounds. The theme of the event was twofold, to honor our nations veterans and to respectfully retire American flags that have past their useful life.
The troop collects and receives worn flags throughout the year and normally retires a dozen or so every campout. But over the years, the inventor of used flags has dramatically increased to the point where this special ceremony retired over 1,300 American flags.
The special event was organized by passed Scout Master, and current Assistant Scout Master, Steve Cathey (retired Navy aircraft maintenance technician). The narrator for the event was Troop Parents’ committee chairman, Jim Steele (retired Army Ranger).
Overall fire safety was generously provided by the NAS Fallon’s federal fire department.
