Movies & More: "Kung Fu Panda" and "The Karate Kid"

We have great free movies for you this weekend. Thank you to all our sustaining members and sponsors for making this possible.

Starting our September movie lineup, playing Friday, September 1, and Saturday, September 2, we have, at 6 p.m., the 2008 computer-animated comedy film “Kung Fu Panda.”

A story about a lazy, irreverent panda named Po, the biggest fan of Kung Fu around, which doesn't come in handy working in his family's noodle shop. Unexpectedly chosen to fulfill an ancient prophecy, Po's dreams become a reality when he joins the world of Kung Fu and studies alongside his idols, the legendary Furious Five. Can he turn his dreams of becoming a Kung Fu master into reality? Po puts his heart and girth into the task, and the unlikely hero ultimately finds that his greatest weaknesses are his greatest strengths. Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, and Jackie Chan provided voices.

Our second feature on both evenings, starting at 7 p.m., is the 1984 family action drama “The Karate Kid.” Daniel and his mother moved from New Jersey to California. Daniel quickly discovers that a dark-haired Italian boy with a Jersey accent doesn't fit into the blond surfer crowd and becomes the target of a group of bullies who study karate.

Fortunately, Daniel befriends Mr. Miyagi, an unassuming repairman who happens to be a martial art master. Miyagi takes Daniel under his wing, training him in a more compassionate form of karate and preparing him to compete against the brutal Cobra Kai. Starring Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita, William Zabka and Elisabeth Shue.
Please join us next Friday, September 8, as comedy takes our stage with September Shenanigans featuring Rick D'Elia, Luke Westberg, and host Brian Lee. Tickets are $20 and available at brianleecomedy.ticketleap.com. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Also, please mark your calendar for September 23 as the Reno-based Americana band Bourgeois Gypsies brings their great music to our historic stage. The concert starts at 7 p.m., and tickets are $10.
