Carol's Book Review -- Properties of Thirst: a Novel by Marianne Wiggins

Rocky, raised in the east, headed west with his wife to ranch near Lone Pine, CA. His wife passes away when their twins are young, and his sister Cas comes to help raise them. World War II is erupting and his son Stryker has joined up. Rocky is battling with the LA Water Corporation as they pull water from the thriving Owens Valley to quench the growing thirst of the expanding Los Angeles area. Then a lawyer from the U.S. Interior Department shows up seeking help to build Manzanar, the Japanese American concentration camp. This majestic novel ties together fascinating American history and family dynamics set against the beautiful backdrop of the Sierras and the high desert.
