2020 Cantaloupe Queen – Makenzee Moretto

2020 Cantaloupe Queen – Makenzee Moretto

This year’s Cantaloupe Festival Queen is 2020 CCHS graduate, Makenzee Moretto. Having attended every Cantaloupe Festival since she can remember, Moretto will have a once in a lifetime chance to represent this beloved hometown tradition before heading off to college.

Fallon Cantaloupe Festival & Country Fair, Nevada’s longest-running agricultural event is currently scheduled to take place on August 28th -30th at the Churchill County Fairgrounds, barring decisions made by Governor Sisolak in light of Covid-19.

With a state championship behind her and a great passion for basketball ahead of her, Moretto will be attending Butte College in Oroville, CA this fall. Not only was she recruited by Butte’s athletic program to join the women’s basketball team, but she also earned a total of five scholarships. Moretto intends to pursue a degree in elementary education.

Moretto, like all the other 2020 graduates in America, met with some very unusual times in trying to wrap up her senior year. But, despite COVID and the many challenges it brought, she still enjoyed her last year at CCHS. One of her favorite events of the school year was getting to paint her senior parking spot with classmates. Even graduation was a great experience, according to Moretto, although it was far from a traditional one. “Graduation – that was kind of cool,” said Moretto, “getting to be on stage, even if it was for a few seconds.”

To be sure, this young lady doesn’t just reign on the court and over this year’s Festival & Country Fair. In true Nevada girl style, Moretto plays softball, volleyball, camps, hunts, and fishes as well. It would seem she is a perfect fit this a true Nevada family-friendly celebration.

The magic show and fire performances are among Moretto’s favorite things to do at the Festival. That, and eating copious amounts of cantaloupe ice cream and fried potato swirls. And, of course, going to concerts with friends. In fact, there doesn’t seem to be anything she doesn’t like about the Cantaloupe Festival.

The pageant, held Tuesday, June 30th at the Fallon Community Theatre, didn’t have any entries for Cantaloupe King, so Moretto will reign solo. Keep an eye out for more information about the festival as organizers make decisions to comply with Covid directives.
